Klimabonus 2026: what the state really pays for your heat pump
The new Klimabonus 2026 scheme applies to invoices dated between 1 January 2026 and 31 December 2030. The amounts for heat pumps are now flat rates, published in black and white on guichet.public.lu. Here is what the state actually pays — and the condition that costs €5,000 if you miss it.
Exactly how much do you get in 2026?
For an existing detached house, according to the 2026 Klimabonus factsheets on guichet.public.lu:
Ground-source heat pump (boreholes or ground collectors): €12,000 — reduced to €8,000 if the installation does not replace an existing fossil boiler or direct electric heating.
Air-to-water heat pump (or a compact unit with mechanical ventilation): €10,000 — reduced to €6,000 without replacing a fossil boiler.
The Klima-Agence for its part puts the figure at up to around €9,000 for an air-source unit and €13,000 for a ground-source unit, including the replacement bonus and removal of the oil tank — with an overall cap of 50% of the investment. The official calculator (aides.klima-agence.lu) works out your specific case, including the municipal and utility grants that sometimes come on top.
Which condition costs €5,000 if you forget it?
The replacement of a fossil boiler (oil or gas) or of direct electric heating. Without it, the grant is cut by €5,000In practice: if your old oil boiler still works, having it replaced by the heat pump — rather than keeping both — changes the amount of the claim. A company that knows the scheme structures the project accordingly from the quote onwards.
The scheme's other technical conditions, published by the Klima-Agence: a COP of at least 3,1 (A2/W35) for an air-source unit, 4,3 (B0/W35) for a ground-source unit, a buffer tank of at least 30 l/kWh in existing buildings and, for hybrid systems, at least 70% of the annual heat demand covered by the heat pump.

How long does the 2026 scheme run?
The basic Klimabonus grant applies to invoices issued between 1 January 2026 and 31 December 2030. The claim is filed after the work, with the invoice and the technical datasheet — within a maximum of 4 years after 31 December of the invoice year. So no artificial rush, but one point matters: the factsheets and forms (last amended: January 2026) must match the right scheme. A claim filed under the old 2022 RGD scheme for a 2026 invoice will be rejected.
Does a heat pump make sense in an existing house?
The Klima-Agence says yes, for three verifiable reasons: the technology has become more efficient, Luxembourg's electricity is getting more renewable, and the climate is warming — +1.6 °C between the 1861-1890 period and the 1991-2020 period according to the government's "Klima an Energie" review. Fewer very cold days means fewer days on which the heat pump works in its least efficient range.

Is the amount the same for a renovation and a new build?
No. The amounts quoted here apply to existing homes where a fossil heating system is replaced. Without a replacement (new builds included), the grant is cut by €5,000. The calculator at aides.klima-agence.lu sets out each case.
Is an air-to-air heat pump subsidised?
Air-to-air splits (reversible air conditioning) do not qualify for the Klimabonus heat pump grant. The scheme targets systems that feed the central heating (air-to-water, ground-source).
Can I combine this with municipal grants?
Often yes. Several municipalities and energy suppliers add their own grants. The Klima-Agence calculator lists them by commune.
Who files the claim: me or the company?
The claim is in the owner's name, but the company supplies the technical datasheet and the certificate of conformity. An installer who works with the Klimabonus daily locks in the amount from the quote.
